Lots of folks are running scared these days. Economic indicators don’t look so hot, gas prices keep soaring, and the stability of our financial institutions is in question. William Nickerson, author of, “How I Turned $1000 into a Million in Real Estate- in My Spare Time,” started his investing career during the Great Depression to […]

Other than real estate, home decorating is probably nearest and dearest to my chicken-fried heart (right after the mister… and the little Brz’s…and possibly JoJo… oh, never mind.)
Much too late in life, I came to realize that beauty and order in our home environment directly correlates to positive mental outlook and increased productivity. Which, of course, is an excellent excuse […]

When the mister and I started in real estate investment and landlording, we were blessed to find all sorts of free resources available on the internet and a great community of investors willing to share their collective wisdom. Hours were spent hanging out on REI forums asking some of the dumbest questions ever and folks with screennames […]

Steven A. Boorstein over at Landlord Business Insider has an article from December titled, “Fair Housing: How to Avoid a $15000 Mistake.” He does a much better job detailing the intricisies of the Fair Housing Act and its impact on landlords.
Many thanks to Mr. Boorstein for alerting us to his excellent article~

A few days back, Maria over at Rentals”R”Us shared her brother-in-law’s experience with holdover tenants in his newly purchased investment property. Her pictures are very cool and illustrate perfectly the type of unforeseen tenant issues that come up sometimes. Consequently, their dilemma was on my mind when I wrote for BiggerPockets this week.
The article’s posted over on […]

Personally, I’m getting tired of all the sky-is-falling economic stuff we’re subjected to every day from every quarter.
This latest article for BiggerPockets takes a decidedly glass-half-full point of view, so if you’re interested, the article’s here.

Terry at Fixer Uppers and Rental Houses has written a great resource for new investors titled, “Fix ‘em Up, Rent ‘em Out.” I wrote up a full review here, but wanted to give it another mention is case anyone missed it during the holiday shuffle.
Most REI investment books are Fruit Loops for breakfast.

January’s my favorite time of year to hit the bookstore and stock up on REI books. Something about leaving the excess of the holiday season behind just begs a trip to Barnes and Noble to stock up on hideously overpriced, over-hyped books that call my name with promises of wealth and happiness (in 60 days […]

Here’s the link to an article written for BiggerPockets with the snappy title, “That’s Too Risky! Overcoming A Poverty Mindset.”
Josh doesn’t know yet, but I may be too overcome with Christmas Cheer to write another for next Saturday.

Confessions of a Former RK Addict
My first real estate investment book purchase wasn’t actually about real estate at all–RK’s Rich Dad books inspired us to action and I will be forever grateful.
Unfortunately, most of the real estate advice and examples were seriously dated, going back to before the humongous tax reforms that changed real estate investment forever […]
