Updated Table Pix

March 4th, 2008 by Connie | Filed under Building Materials & Products.

Someone Who Shall Remain Nameless brought home some uninvited germ-y house guests and, as of this writing, 3 out of 4 Brz’s are feeling mighty rotten. As there seemed no point in keeping the mister awake as one of my lungs tries to make a break for independence, I thought I’d entertain the troops with a few pictures of the completed tables.

The leather is totally ruined by this point.

Once the leather was removed, I took a palm sander to the tops to remove the glue residue and the old, surrounding finish

Here, DD3 is demonstrating her technique for getting into the grooves.

Sanding completed, top wiped with mineral spirits– no stain yet. The mister says the table is mahogany veneer  over poplar.

And after 2 coats of red oak stain (Miniwax) and 4 coats of water based satin polyurethane. The poplar showing through in the grooves didn’t take the stain as well as the rest of the piece. The tables now have a bit more casual look which suits our house just fine.

So– all’s well and all that. I’m off to prop myself on the couch and try to catch a few winks

I like those tables. Your inspiring me to go out and look at old furniture. Our dream is to build an old farmhouse on the lot next door and do it “Old”. This includes furniture. I’ve vowed to start working on it as the 10 years we’ve set as a goal is really not that far off.

    Hope everyone feels better soon!
    Blessings,

When we moved into our new house we had almost zero furniture. Over the years we’ve made due with mostly hand-me-downs. Our trailer was about the size of our current garage so you can imagine how much furniture we needed :)

I was shocked when we started looking at new furniture– cost is through the roof and quality is in the cellar. It’s taking a little longer to find older, quality pieces, but well worth the trouble.

That palm sander really did a job on the glue and old finish. The table really looks good now.

I hope the family bounces back from the germ attack soon!

OK, Connie, enough resting on your laurels. Or poplars in your case (goods). Time to get back to real estate ruminations. We know your thinking has changed (haven’t we all changed our thinking in recent weeks and months), and we are lacking your insight to add to our own. So, come down off mahogany mountain, and tell us some of your thoughts on where you are and where you might go. Or wouldn’t go on a bet.

    Ha!

I haven’t been silent (totally) by choice– the flu made a visit and stuck around much longer than expected~

Will be ruminating very soon, promise :)

I have been stopping by every day and today I thought I’d say hello.
We’re wrapping up things on our end and waiting for the sale. I’ve been wondering what you’ve been wondering. Looking at our own risk tolerance/finance issues we can only do one house at a time. I respect those that can juggle more than a house at a time. We’re just not those folks. Slow and steady wins the race is more our motto.

    Be blessed!
    Maria
